Why a replacement part is the ideal single-item import

Most single-item imports involve a trade-off between the saving and the shipping and duty. Replacement parts are different. The alternative is often not a higher local price but no part at all, which means scrapping a working washing machine, inverter, sewing machine, treadmill, espresso machine, CNC router or printer. A control board that weighs 300 grams and fits in a small box is cheap to fly, and its value to you is the whole appliance. Chinese platforms, especially 1688 and Taobao, sell the parts that the factories that built the appliance actually use, because many of those appliances were made in China in the first place.

Which parts can realistically be sourced?

• Electronics: control boards (PCBs), display panels, inverter boards, power supplies, remote controls, sensors, thermostats and thermal fuses.
• Motors and drives: small motors, pumps, fans, treadmill controllers, sewing machine motors, drill and grinder armatures.
• Mechanical: gears, belts, bearings, couplings, valves, seals, gaskets, door locks, hinges, knobs and handles.
• Consumables: filters, heating elements, blades, nozzles, print heads, laser tubes and lenses.

Large or heavy assemblies such as compressors, full drums or complete machine frames are poor single imports because freight dominates. Everything else above ships by air without difficulty.

Gather this before you search

You cannot test-fit a part from Pakistan, so the information you give the seller does the job that a counter in a parts shop would do. Collect:

1. The appliance model number from the rating plate, usually on the back, base or inside a door. Photograph the whole plate.
2. The part number printed or stamped on the old part. On PCBs look for a code on the board itself, not on a sticker, and note the revision (for example V1.2 versus V2.0).
3. Clear photos of the old part from several angles, including connectors, pin counts and mounting points.
4. Measurements in millimetres: length, width, height, hole spacing, shaft diameter, belt length, thread size. A ruler in the photo helps.
5. Electrical ratings: voltage, wattage, amperage, frequency, from the old part or the appliance plate.

With this, a seller on 1688 or Taobao can confirm compatibility in a message, and a sourcing agent can search by photo when the part number returns nothing.

Where to look

1688 is the strongest source for Chinese-made appliance parts because the suppliers who make the parts sell there directly, and many list single pieces. Taobao has a wide range of consumer appliance parts and repair shops that sell tested boards. Alibaba is better for industrial machine parts with English listings. All three are reachable only through an agent for payment and shipping, since 1688 and Taobao ship within China only and take Chinese payment. What duty applies to a replacement part?

Parts are classified by HS code, usually under the heading for the machine they belong to or under a general parts heading, and each carries its own customs duty slab. Additional customs duty, sales tax at the standard rate and advance income tax apply on the customs value including freight. Combined taxes on imports commonly fall between 25 and 60 percent of customs value and change with budgets, so confirm the current figure. Shipping notes for parts

Electronics should travel in antistatic bags with padding. Heating elements and glass parts need rigid boxing. Motors are dense and are charged on actual weight, so a small motor is fine but a large one can be costly. Strong magnets, which appear in some motors and sensors, are restricted by air above certain strengths. Parts containing oil or refrigerant, and sealed gas struts, can be refused. A part with a built-in battery, such as a backup board, ships normally; a loose battery pack does not. Door to door by air is typically 7 to 15 days after dispatch.

What commonly goes wrong?

• Near-identical variant. The connector has one pin more, the mount is rotated, the revision differs. Precise photos and measurements prevent this.
• Wrong voltage spec. A 110V element or motor instead of 220V. Always state 220V 50Hz.
• Transit damage. Cracked PCBs or bent terminals from thin packaging. Ask the seller to pad it.
• Used board sold as new. Repair shops sell tested pulls; that can be fine if disclosed, but used electronics are restricted for import, so prefer new.
• No exchange. If it does not fit, it cannot be swapped. Getting the information right first time is the saving.
