Why is fitness equipment a weight problem?

Most gym gear is either very light or very heavy, and there is not much in between. Air freight is charged per kilogram on the actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. A 1 kg massage gun costs little to fly. A 60 kg bench with a 100 kg plate set costs a great deal, and there is no bulk shipment to spread fixed costs over. Sea freight is priced per cubic metre with a minimum of roughly 1 CBM plus fixed port fees, so a single machine does not escape the problem by going by sea either. That is why local gym equipment shops exist: they import by the container.

What fitness gear is worth importing as a single item?

• Resistance bands, loop bands and tubes in a specific resistance set.
• Grips, straps, wrist wraps, knee sleeves and lifting belts.
• Jump ropes, especially weighted or speed ropes.
• Smartwatches and fitness trackers from Chinese brands. They have built-in batteries and ship by air normally.
• Massage guns and compact recovery devices with built-in batteries.
• Boxing gloves, hand wraps, shin guards and similar protective gear.
• Yoga mats, blocks and straps, although mats are bulky and cost more than their weight suggests.
• Adjustable dumbbell handles without plates, or a single kettlebell handle.

These are the items where Chinese prices are far below local retail and where the freight is a small part of the total.

What is usually not worth importing as one unit?

• Treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes. 40 to 100 kg or more, large cartons, and local shops stock plenty.
• Benches, squat racks and cable machines. Heavy steel, large and awkward.
• Plate sets, kettlebells and loaded dumbbells. Pure weight, which is exactly what freight charges for.
• Rowing machines. Long cartons push the volumetric weight up.

An exception can exist for a specific, hard-to-find machine where the local price is many times the Chinese price. Even then, ask for a delivered quote before assuming it works out.

What about duty and tax on fitness equipment?

Pakistan charges customs duty by tariff classification, plus additional customs duty, sales tax and advance income tax. Together these commonly add 25 to 60 percent of the customs value, which is the CIF value including freight. Sports goods, electronics such as smartwatches, and steel equipment can sit in different slabs. Rates change with budgets and SROs, so confirm the current figure or get a delivered price. What should I check before ordering fitness gear from China?

• Sizes. Gloves, belts, sleeves and apparel from Chinese sellers run small. Use the seller's cm measurements, not S, M or L.
• Packed weight and dimensions. Ask the seller. This decides your freight.
• Batteries. Devices with built-in batteries, such as smartwatches and massage guns, ship by air normally. Spare loose batteries do not.
• Branded items. A "Nike" or "Under Armour" item at a tenth of the price is a counterfeit and will be seized by customs. Choose unbranded or genuine Chinese brands.
• Supplements. Protein powders, creatine and pre-workouts fall under DRAP rules and are often held. Avoid importing them.

Is it cheaper than Daraz?
