A China sourcing agent finds and verifies suppliers, negotiates prices, places and pays for orders (including on 1688, which foreigners cannot use directly), inspects goods at a warehouse in China, consolidates multiple orders into one shipment, and arranges shipping and customs clearance to your door in Pakistan. Agents charge a service fee, typically a percentage of the order value or a flat fee per shipment. For a single item or a small order, an agent usually saves more than it costs.
What exactly does a sourcing agent handle?
| Stage | What the agent does | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Product search | Finds suppliers on 1688, Alibaba and offline networks, compares prices and MOQs | Send a link, photo or description |
| Negotiation | Negotiates in Chinese on price, packaging, lead time | Approve the final quote |
| Ordering and payment | Places the order, pays the supplier in RMB | Pay the agent in PKR |
| Quality control | Receives goods at a China warehouse, counts, inspects, sends photos and video | Approve or reject |
| Consolidation | Combines orders from several suppliers into one shipment | Nothing |
| Shipping | Books air or sea freight, prepares export documents | Choose speed vs cost |
| Customs in Pakistan | Clears goods, pays duty and taxes | Nothing |
| Delivery | Delivers to your address anywhere in Pakistan | Receive and inspect |
Why do Pakistani buyers use agents?
- Access to 1688. The cheapest supplier base in China is closed to foreigners without an agent. See Alibaba vs 1688.
- Payment. Paying Chinese suppliers from Pakistan is slow and often fails. Paying an agent locally by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa is instant.
- Language. Negotiating with factories in Chinese gets better prices and fewer misunderstandings than English chat on Alibaba.
- Quality control. Someone physically checks the goods before freight and duty are spent on them.
- Consolidation. Buying from five suppliers and shipping once instead of five times saves a large share of freight cost.
- Customs. No NTN, STRN, WeBOC or clearing agent needed. The agent delivers duty-paid.
How much does a sourcing agent charge?
Models vary. The common ones are:
- Percentage of order value, often in the range of 5–10% for sourcing and purchasing, with freight and duty charged at cost or included in a landed quote.
- Flat fee per shipment for simple buy-and-forward orders.
- All-in landed price per unit that includes product, agent fee, freight, duty and delivery. This is the easiest to compare and the model we use.
Whatever the model, ask for the full breakdown before you commit: product cost, service fee, freight, duty and taxes, and local delivery. An agent who will not break down the price is hiding margin somewhere.
When should I go direct instead?
An agent adds the most value for small and medium orders and for buyers without import registration. Going direct makes sense when:
- You are ordering full containers regularly and have your own clearing agent.
- You need deep technical involvement in custom manufacturing and prefer to manage the factory relationship yourself.
- You have a trusted supplier, a working payment channel, and the volume to justify your own NTN, STRN and WeBOC setup.
Even then, many large importers keep an agent for quality inspection and consolidation.
How do I choose a good sourcing agent?
- Transparent pricing. Full landed-cost breakdown, no hidden charges.
- A real warehouse in China where goods are received and checked. Ask for photos of your actual order from that warehouse.
- Local support in Pakistan. Someone you can call on WhatsApp in Urdu or English during Pakistani working hours.
- References or recent orders. Ask what they sourced last month and for whom.
- Clear policy on wrong or damaged goods. What happens if the supplier sends the wrong item? A good agent returns it before shipping and does not charge you.
- Small order acceptance. An agent who insists on a large first order is not interested in helping you test.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a sourcing agent and a freight forwarder?
A freight forwarder only moves goods you have already bought. A sourcing agent finds the supplier, buys, inspects and consolidates, then arranges the freight. Many agents, including us, do both.
How much does a China sourcing agent cost in Pakistan?
Commonly 5 to 10 percent of order value, a flat fee per shipment, or an all-in landed price per unit. Always get the full breakdown of product, fee, freight, duty and delivery.
Can a sourcing agent buy from 1688 for me?
Yes. This is one of the main reasons to use one. The agent registers, pays in RMB, and receives the goods at a Chinese warehouse before exporting to Pakistan.
Do I need an NTN to import through a sourcing agent?
No. A door-to-door agent clears customs under their own registration and delivers duty-paid. You only need a CNIC and a delivery address.
Is using a sourcing agent safe?
It is safer than paying unknown Chinese suppliers directly, provided the agent is transparent about pricing, has a real warehouse, and has local support you can reach. Start with a small order to test them.
