Air Freight vs Courier From China to Pakistan for One Item

What is the difference between courier and air freight?

Both go by plane. The difference is who books the space and how many parcels share it.

Express courier means DHL, FedEx, UPS, Aramex or a similar network picks up your single parcel from the seller, flies it in its own network, clears it through Pakistan Customs under its own licence and delivers it. One parcel, one account, end to end.

Consolidated air freight means a freight forwarder collects many small parcels at a warehouse in China, packs them into one shipment, books cargo space on a commercial flight, clears the shipment in Pakistan through a clearing agent and then hands each parcel to a local courier. Your item travels with hundreds of others and shares the cost.

How is the cost calculated?

Courier pricing is per parcel, by weight band, at published retail rates. The first half kilogram carries most of the cost and each extra half kilogram adds a step. Fuel surcharges and a remote area fee can apply. For a light item the courier charge often exceeds the price of the item, which is the shock many Pakistani buyers get when they try to buy one piece on Alibaba. Air freight pricing is per kilogram across the whole consolidated shipment, so each parcel pays a share. Both methods charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight for air freight is length times width times height in centimetres divided by 6000. A light but boxy item is charged as if it were heavier. Because the forwarder buys cargo space in bulk, the per kilogram cost is much lower than a courier's retail tariff.

Which one is faster?

Courier. A DHL or FedEx parcel from a Chinese city to Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad commonly arrives in 5 to 10 days including customs. Consolidated air freight commonly takes 7 to 15 days door to door, because the parcel first travels to the forwarder's warehouse, waits for the next shipment, and then clears customs as part of a batch. The difference is usually a few days, not weeks. Both are far faster than the 25 to 60 days of postal shipping from AliExpress.

Who handles customs?

With courier, the courier company files the declaration and pays duty on your behalf, then collects it from you before delivery, plus a fixed clearance or disbursement fee. You do not know the duty until the courier calls. If the item needs a valuation check or extra documents, the courier asks you to supply them.

With air freight, the forwarder's clearing agent files the declaration for the shipment. If you arranged the freight yourself you pay the duty assessed. Courier vs air freight for one item

When does express courier win?

• The item is high value and the courier charge is a small share of the total.
• You need it in a week and the extra cost is worth it.
• You are buying on Alibaba with Trade Assurance and want the seller to arrange everything in your name.
• The item is tiny and light, so the first weight band covers it.

When does consolidated air freight win?

• The item weighs more than about half a kilogram, where courier bands climb fast.
• The item is on 1688 or Taobao, which do not ship internationally, so a China warehouse is needed anyway.
• You want to know the full cost, including duty, before you pay.
• You are happy with 7 to 15 days rather than 5 to 10.

What about sea freight for one item?

Sea is priced per cubic metre with a minimum of around one cubic metre, plus fixed port and documentation fees. For a single item that is almost never economical, and it takes 25 to 45 days. Sea only makes sense for a single very large or very heavy item, or for items such as power banks that air carriers refuse.
